BLANK高円寺で開催される2021年の個展「盆栽」で27点の水彩インクの新作シリーズを発表します。
このシリーズでは、「盆栽」というイメージを通して「人間によるデザイン」について考えます。
世の中の全てのものはデザインされていると思いますが、私たちは、あるデザインに対しては価値を見出すものの、あるデザインはデザインとして無視するのは何故なのかなど、絵を見ながら楽しく考えていただけたら幸いです。
In her 2021 Solo Exhibition, “Bonsai” at BLANK Koenji, Ward presents a collection of 27 new watercolor and ink artworks. The series uses bonsai trees to ask viewers to think about “human design,” and to enjoy the humor in the art while wondering why we find certain design worthy of admiration and display, while other design we all but ignore.
エリカ・ワードはカリフォルニア生まれ、東京在住の水彩アーティスト。
日本のデザインや「和」にインスピレーションを感じ、作品のモチーフとしてよく用いる。
作品の中で日常的な物をシュールに合わせることで、身の回りにある物が美しいもの、そして文化的なシンボルであるのではないかと見る者に問いかける。
Erica Ward is a California-born, Tokyo-based watercolor artist. She takes inspiration from Japanese design and often uses Japanese motifs in her work. By arranging everyday sights and objects in surreal ways within her artworks, Ward asks the viewer to consider the mundane daily objects in their surroundings as things of beauty and symbols of culture.
