Anyone else here do work for clients outside Japan? I'd be grateful for advice on whether or not I charge Japanese Sales tax... or if there are any other tax-related issues to consider.
I've been searching online and it seems that some Japanese companies charge Withholding Taxes on foreign based freelancers... but nothing related to Japanese-based freelancers charging overseas clients.
Thanks to anyone who can share their experience!
Sales tax for foreign clients?
Hey Tom, as far as I know, you shouldn't charge sales tax or include any withholding tax for overseas clients.
Thanks Mark!
I didn't think so, but after reading about local companies deducting withholding tax on behalf of foreign vendors, I figured it was a good idea to double-check with folks experiences here...
Hi Tom,
Agree with Mark with the caveat that if the work you are doing is for their use IN Japan, then you may have to charge sales tax. So if you were creating a Japanese brochure for them for use here, or managing an event here, then it would apply. If you are just providing you services for something they are doing overseas, then it wouldn't.
Interesting. I didn't know that. Thanks Steve!
Thanks Steve Martin that's helpful to know
