About me
As a member of a sexual minority living in contemporary
Japanese society, Nomura focuses in his work on the struggles, conflicts and world-views of sexual minorities in a society that has been constructed solely for cisgender straight people.
“When art portrays the forms of people who are living with this kind of conflict, there is a fear that by depicting them in a ‘conventionally beautiful’ way, it will dramatise their struggles and present the suffering itself as something beautiful. That’s not what I wanted to express in my work. It is not the case that such conflict born from injustice must always exist; if there is beauty to be found in that reality, it is in the hearts of people who are undaunted by such injustice and continue to fight against it. When I paint abstract images of people living under injustice, they always take the form of suffering people - but merely showing their suffering is not my objective. To show the strength of their humanity, I use powerful abstract forms and I emphasise their strength with rich colours. I want create paintings that show the strength of people who live under injustice but continue to resist it rather than being swallowed up by it. Our hearts may be healed by clear skies and gentle breezes, but many of us have also experienced healing through thunder storms and drizzling rain; my paintings are of the latter kind.”
