About me

Apart from meal breaks, I have been painting more or less non-stop since my early teens. After graduating from the Central School of Art and Design in London, I taught art and worked as an artist and illustrator in the UK, then moved to Japan in the mid-70s where I have worked as an English teacher and EFL textbook author and illustrator. I taught general and art and design-related English at Tama Art University for 20 years and retired in 2014. My work is mainly abstract, in acrylics and oils, and I also make woodblock prints.

  13. One of a series of large drawings based on mugshots. In my recent Canvas presentation, I said I wasn't interested in telling stories. I think that's true, but maybe I am interested in suggesting stories. The mugshots are frontal, unsmiling, and accompanied by a brief account of a crime or... continue reading (0, 1 image)

  19. This turned out to be a bit similar to the paintings I was making in the late 1960s.

  20. I've been making collages for a while now. As a painter, I enjoy the different approach they provide to color, composition, and texture. Although they usually start out with no particular image in mind, they generally develop some kind of relationship to landscape, imagined or remembered.

  21. Another collage. This one has a tenuous connection to Bodiam Castle, a favourite spot in Sussex.
