About me

Illustration | Editorial Design | Concept Art
Meg Ishihara is a 24 year-old illustrator based in Japan. Growing up, she spent much of her time doodling (mostly on her math notes) and pouring over picture books at her school library where she found her love for art. At age 8, Pixar's The Incredibles introduced her to the world of animation and concept design, igniting her passion to become an artist. On weekends, she'd spend hours creating stories, designing worlds and characters, all with her trusty 2B pencil. She taught herself to draw with traditional media first, and later to work digitally using Photoshop. At 19, Meg went to Hawaii for college and established her business in illustration. Now she's back in Japan. In spring 2020, her first children’s book Hound Won’t Go (written by Lisa Rogers) was published by Albert Whitman & Co. Cute dogs, inky pens and textured brushes are her obsessions, and she draws inspiration from everyday life with her family, friends and two chihuahuas.

Meg creates illustrations for publication and products, as well as concept art for videos and animation. Photoshop, Procreate and InDesign are her main tools, and she offers editorial design services as well. Her hope is to bring joy, laughter and light into people’s homes through art, and she aspires to work in visual development for animation and eventually illustrate her own children's book.

Her biggest inspirations include Mary Blair, Barbara Cooney, Aliki, Garth Williams, Bernard Waber, Hilary Knight, classic Disney films and vintage children’s books.
As a new artist in Kanagawa/Tokyo, she's looking to connect with creatives here and hope to freelance full-time eventually. Any opportunities to collaborate are welcome!
