RIKKI KASSO

Currently residing in Byron bay, Australia, the self taught art director, photographer and multi disciplinary visual artist left his native New York City for Tokyo in 2003 on an invite from VOGUE JAPAN to host a retrospective of his works from 1999-2002 at the Rocket Gallery, Omotesando. The next 9 years were spent in Tokyo (Shibuya) immersed in the unique and ancient Japanese culture which not only influenced his art making practices but permeated it's way through his entire being.

Produced during his stay, the photographic series "Tokyo Undressed" garnered him the title of 2009-2010 "Photographer of the Year' at the UK's Erotic Awards, the collection became a global success after it featured as a blog narrative and was published in a 280 page photo novel by the premiere Japanese art book publisher Powershovel Books. Whist in Japan Kasso was invited to create a permanent public art work to celebrate the new Mejiro Institute of Child Education and Development, in Mejiro, Tokyo. The work was awarded both The Good Design Award and The Children's Design Award and is viewed by millions of commuters daily as they travel upon on the most populated train line in the world. Perhaps the greatest mark that Japanese culture made upon Kasso's work was his discovery and appropriation of traditional Japanese Sumi ink and brush stroke techniques. Sumi ink is created using a method which has changed little over the last 2000 years and it's history is deeply rooted in Zen Buddhism. Kasso fuses the western style of impressionist painting with the delicate accuracy of an asian calligrapher in a unique and contemporary adaptation.

Kasso's artistic virtuosity is effortlessly translated through a variety of mediums and expressions from photography and film to paintings, drawings, and installations. His remarkable vision is presented through juxtaposed images of feminine sexuality, timeless landscapes and heavenly realities. The artist is remarkable in his ability to maintain eroticism in his work without ever losing delicacy or resorting to crudity, to express a gesture that suggests an entire erotic narrative, sometimes dreamlike and sometimes suggestively sadistic, but always in a language of love.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My works represent my fascination with; isolation in crowded environments, the subtleties of sexuality in humans and nature, and the pure sincerity of voyeuristic love. For me art is isolation, when we take something from its natural environment and put it on display, whether its a canvas from the studio or a flower from the feild we define beauty in its isolation.

At the same time isolation is an emotion or a feeling.Contemplating love is perceived as an isolating moment of blissful confusion....Which all of the subjects in my artworks could simply be contemplating love?

The line between love and sorrow is long and jagged, black on one side white on the other, where they collide a spectrum of shades is created where simple becomes complex and clarity between back and white no longer exists. That it why I prefer to work in black and appreciate everything that contrasts the darkness.

The use of sumi ink on pine wood, is way to work completely with natural materials, that complete the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Using the ashes from wood and returning it to its source to create something new. To bring life to the lifeless through the ashes of death.

Art also is entertainment for the voyeuristic, a peek inside the mind of the creative force, a perverse analysis of an everyday activity of creating beauty. Idolising timeless preservation where mind meets matter. So in its complete reflection my works are of an observance of the unseen, a voyeur to my own existence. To really understand how to paint a woman, you must understand her temperament better than her muscles and bones.
