Daido Moriyama: Ango

15 January 2018 ● 1 min read ● 2 images

When the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, people gather below the trees to drink beer and eat snacks. They take strolls along the trees to enjoy the view, enjoy the spring, enjoy their re-awakened spirit. But all of this is a lie.

On invitation of book designer Satoshi Machiguchi (of Match & Company), I translated Ango Sakaguchi's classic story In the Cherry Forest, Beneath Flowers in Full Bloom(桜の森の満開の下)into English.

The story is joined by photos taken by the legendary Daido Moriyama. In the book, text and photographs interact and stimulate each other -- the strange emptiness of Ango's text affects Moriyama's photos; Moriyama's dark photos of cherry blossoms in turn change the mood of the story.
