Soft Vinyl Bunbuku Chagama

Soft Vinyl Bunbuku Chagama

Scrambling to finish several wax prototypes I wasn't satisfied with, I started scultping this guy during a break. I got caught up in it, and ended up abandoning the other prototypes to focus on this one. I suffered a few delays with the metal plating for this toy (and the Sexy Yakan / Sexy Hop mold), and had to push back release until April 2nd. Luckily, thanks to the kindness of Nakano's One Up, they took 20 of them and sold out within a few ours of opening. To date, 2 different color variations have been produced, with another 2 more releasing at the end of May at Design Festa 45.

This toy, and the Sexy Yakan / Hop toy, fall into the idea that "designer vinyl" should be fun, inexpensive, and easy to obtain. I want to avoid 3D printing for products that will be produced in soft vinyl, as I feel a lot of the craftsmanship from the process gets lost. Unlike PVC or Chinese soft vinyl rotocasting, Japanese soft vinyl is a very hands-on process that I've been lucky enough to participate in.
